Impact Salud A dementia screening tool for rural Peru

In remote areas of Peru, approximately 300,000 people are living with dementia, a condition that brings twice as many health complications compared to those living without it. The healthcare system here is often overwhelmed and under-resourced, lacking trained specialists and essential diagnostic tools. This leaves families in a state of constant anxiety, unsure of how to manage the condition and improve the quality of life for their loved ones.

Early diagnosis can make a world of difference. It allows families to plan better, seek appropriate treatments, and provide the necessary care and support. Yet, in many parts of Peru, this crucial step is missed, leading to mismanagement and a decline in the quality of life for both the patients and their caregivers.

To address this, we developed an mHealth diagnostic system designed to be accessible and inclusive, even for non-healthcare professionals. Created in collaboration with Peruvian community health workers and healthcare professionals, this system is tailored for use in remote areas.
